Job Description
Do you want to work with people in transition and contribute to a safer society? As a correctional officer, you are present where things happen and create stability in a complex everyday life where you make a difference for other people and society at large. To thrive and succeed in your role, it is important that you share the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's core values regarding a humane view of humanity, respect for the individual, and the belief that people are capable of development.
As a correctional officer at the Prison in Gävle and the Remand Prison in Bomhus, you have daily contact with clients and work closely with both colleagues and other professional groups. The tasks are varied and include, among other things, nursing, security, search, and safety work, as well as counseling/motivational work and planning regarding the client's sentence execution.
Work at a remand prison often involves clear routines with a focus on nursing and security. Clients may be deprived of their liberty for long periods without contact with anyone other than their lawyer and the prison staff, which places special demands on you as a correctional officer. Here, you get to use both your calmness, your judgment, and your understanding of human nature to contribute to safety and structure.
You start your employment with a three-week introduction on-site in Gävle, with a planned start in week 35. To be considered for the position, you must be able to participate during the introduction period and subsequently begin working. After a period of employment, you will be offered a place on the Swedish Prison and Probation Service's mandatory basic training, which lasts eight weeks. You will receive a salary throughout the training period. During the probationary period, ongoing assessments are conducted that form the basis for the possibility of a permanent employment contract.
Qualifications
Your personal qualities are important to us. As a correctional officer, you need to be secure, stable, and have good self-awareness. You work together with your colleagues to drive the operations and therefore need good collaboration skills as well as being clear in your communication. In your professional practice, good judgment and integrity are required. You must have the physical ability to act when the situation demands it.
We are looking for someone who has:
- A completed upper secondary education or other education combined with work experience that the Swedish Prison and Probation Service deems relevant
- Work experience, including seasonal work, hourly employment, or self-employment. Internships and volunteer work are not considered equivalent to employment
- Good knowledge of the Swedish language, both spoken and written
- Good computer skills
- Category B driver's license
The following are also considered merits:
- Work experience from pedagogical work, security work, social care, psychiatry, or healthcare and social care. Work experience from the correctional system is considered particularly meritorious
- Knowledge in relevant areas, such as behavioral science, criminology, psychiatry, law, and conflict management
- Relevant language skills
